Alternative therapies can help smokers kick the habit

A review of 14 international studies suggests that alternative therapies such as acupuncture and hypnosis can help smokers kick their habit.

Some trials show that smokers who use acupuncture for cessation are more than three times as likely to be tobacco-free six months to a year later, found Mehdi Tahiri and colleagues at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
Another study which evaluated hypnosis also showed that smokers who took hypnotherapy sessions had a higher success rate than those who used conventional methods such as nicotine-replacement, drugs and behavioral counseling.
There are plenty of unanswered questions about the two alternative techniques including exactly how effective they might be and how hypnosis and acupuncture measure up against conventional therapies, wrote the Canadian team in the American Journal of Medicine.
Most people who want to quit smoking start with conventional therapies, Tahiri said adding that for smokers who do not like medications or those who find cessation with standard therapies unsuccessful, acupuncture or hypnosis can be a good recommendation.
