 Ethiopian PM wins landslide victory

The incumbent Ethiopian prime minister has won a landslide victory in the legislative election, the national election commission announced late on Monday.

The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) of Meles Zenawi performed very well across the nation in Sunday’s election, according to the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).

Despite a good turnout in the capital by the opposition coalition MEDREK, the ruling party has taken the overall lead, the NEBE said. The EPRDF and allied parties had by far the most votes in nine out of the eleven regions and cities to have officially announced results thus far.

Zenawi came to power in 1991 after his EPRDF overthrew Mengistu Haile Mariam, the brutal dictator who ruled over the country with an iron fist.

The EPRDF believe strong economic growth, the launch of energy and infrastructure projects, and improvements in healthcare and education have encouraged voters to stick with the status quo.

However, the opposition parties have cried foul and threatened to challenge the results in a court of law.

Official results must be released before June 21.
