Americans OK with Muslims in U.S. Military

November 15, 2009

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – Adults in the United States believe Muslims should continue to be allowed to serve in their country’s military, according to a poll by Angus Reid Public Opinion. 53 per cent of respondents agree with this notion, while 33 per cent disagree.

Afghanistan has been the main battleground in the war on terrorism. The conflict began in October 2001, after the Taliban regime refused to hand over Osama bin Laden without evidence of his participation in the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. Al-Qaeda operatives hijacked and crashed four airplanes on Sept. 11, 2001, killing nearly 3,000 people.

About 3,000 of the 2.3 million servicemen and women in the army claim an Islamic religious affiliation.

On Nov. 5, 13 people were killed and 30 more were wounded when a gunman opened fire inside Fort Hood, the most populous U.S. military base in the world. The suspected gunman has been identified as Nidal Malik Hasan, an army psychiatrist and a Muslim.

On Nov. 9, during a memorial service for the Fort Hood shooting victims, U.S. president Barack Obama declared: “We are a nation of laws whose commitment to justice is so enduring that we would treat a gunman and give him due process, just as surely as we will see that he pays for his crimes. We’re a nation that guarantees the freedom to worship as one chooses.”
