It is hoped that readers will be able to locate or assist in finding Mitrice, after the success of a case in Britain where Mathaba readers assisted in locating a young teenager who also went missing and received no national media coverage.

Mitrice Richardson, a young black woman of Los Angeles, had no money to pay her $89 bill about 10 pm on Thursday at Geoffrey’s restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, 40 miles from her home.

Mitrice tried to call her great–grandmother for assistance with the bill payment – but the restaurant staff refused to accept the bill on phone without a faxed verification, which was not available, and called the Sheriff’s department instead.

The police found marijuana, a herbal weed which possession is illegal in some states, in Mitrice’s car, and took her into their custody for possession of illegal herbal substance and for not paying the restaurant bill.

The police took her to the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff’s station, approximately 13 miles away from the restaurant. She was released by police at around 1 a.m. without cash nor identification with her, and thus unable to take any transport to find her way home.

She may presumably have been stressed at the time of her release by the unreasonableness of the experience, and has not been verified as seen or heard from since.

Mitrice is an upstanding citizen and student and deserves better treatment than what the Malibu sheriff’s gave. This did not have to happen. There have been reports that she may be suffering some mental health or stress issues, which would be exacerbated by the experience.

The news reports say that detectives, family and friends believe her disappearance is probably related to a recently disclosed psychological problem.

Police however claim that she was neither drunk nor mentally afflicted, in defence against anger at the irresponsibility of releasing Mitrice without money in the dead of night at 1:25 a.m., without her car, purse or cellphone. The police knew full well that no public transport was available.

The Los Angeles Police Department is now handling the matter as a missing persons case, and has assigned it to the Robbery-Homicide Division, which has greater resources.

Mitrice is a California State Fullerton graduate with a 4.0 GPA and is set to begin a doctoral program. A website FindMatrice.info has been set up in an effort to find her.

Mitrice Richardson is an African-American, approximately 135 pounds and 5-foot-5-inches having curly brown, hair and hazel eyes, and was wearing a dim shirt and blue jeans.
