Queen of England Imposes Direct Rule on Turks & Caicos Islands

The British foreign ministry `Foreign Office` on behalf of the Queen of England took `legal action` to impose direct colonial rule from London upon the Caribbean `overseas territory`.

“After careful consideration, I have instructed the (island’s British) governor to bring into force today an Order in Council which will suspend ministerial government and the House of Assembly for a period of up to two years,” said Chris Bryant, a Foreign Office minister.

Gordon Wetherell, the English Queen’s governor on the Caribbean territory, assumed responsibility for running the islands. Most of the former British colonies in the Caribbean have resident “governors” who are mandated by the Queen of England to take administrative control of an otherwise independent state upon orders from the British royal family.

The move came after London drew up legislation that stripped the Turks & Caicos island’s Cabinet and elected assembly of all of their democratic powers under a 2006 constitution and put the British-appointed governor in control.

There have been no reports of resistance to the move, from the islands population which numbers only around 20,000 people.

A probe was launched in England since last July into allegations of corruption in land sales, distribution of government contracts and development deals and the granting of voting rights, and misuse of public funds.

Ministerial government could be suspended for up to two years.

The overthrown government leader has refused to step down but was last heard of attending court in London in a challenge to the move.

Mathaba contacted the London lawyers acting for the overthrown Prime Minister Michael Misick offering news advanced coverage of Misick’s opposition to the planned British move which had become known already several weeks ago, but has not received any replies.

Britain started leaking its intentions to overthrow the government but found media silence with no objection or controversy ensuing and so was able to act to re-install direct colonial rule on its former colony on Friday 14th August 2009.
